Quick Navigation • UAE Payroll & WPS Playbook
If you have ever processed company payroll in Excel, you probably know the exact feeling: it is the 28th of the month, salaries are due, and someone’s overtime doesn’t add up. You go back through the workbook row by row, discover a formula dragged one cell too far, and patch it. Then you worry about what else was quietly miscalculated.
While software cannot make payroll obligations disappear, Tally Prime basics take all the guesswork out of monthly processing. Employee contracts, pay heads, attendance logs, and salary disbursement vouchers live seamlessly in one auditable database. More importantly for businesses operating across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the Northern Emirates, Tally Prime automates the preparation of statutory UAE Wages Protection System (WPS) SIF files required by your corporate bank every month.
Payroll in Tally Prime is a comprehensive suite designed to compute salaries accurately, track employee attendance, manage statutory allowances, and post automated accounting entries.
The module natively handles:
You don’t need to configure every advanced parameter on day one. Most finance departments start with basic pay heads, employee masters, and monthly salary vouchers, expanding into automated biometric attendance imports over time.
By default, payroll capabilities are turned off in fresh company configurations. Enabling them takes less than thirty seconds:
Returning to the Gateway of Tally, you will now see dedicated Payroll Info (under Masters) and Payroll Vouchers (under Transactions).
A pay head represents an individual component of an employee’s total compensation package. In the UAE, labour contracts typically bifurcate compensation into Basic Salary and allowances to comply with gratuity calculation rules.
| Pay Head Name | Pay Head Type | Under Group | Calculation Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Salary | Earnings for Employees | Indirect Expenses | On Attendance (Present Days) |
| Housing Allowance (HRA) | Earnings for Employees | Indirect Expenses | Flat Rate / Fixed Monthly |
| Transport / Conveyance | Earnings for Employees | Indirect Expenses | Flat Rate / Fixed Monthly |
| Overtime Allowance | Earnings for Employees | Indirect Expenses | On Production (Overtime Hours) |
| Salary Advance Deduction | Deductions from Employees | Loans & Advances (Asset) | Flat Rate |
| Unpaid Leave Deduction | Deductions from Employees | Indirect Expenses | On Attendance (Absent Days) |
Basic Salary).Indirect Expenses.Once your pay heads are established, add your workforce into Tally Prime. For each employee, capture their complete administrative and financial profile:
AE (e.g., AE070331234567890123456).A single transposed character in an IBAN will cause the corporate banking portal to reject that employee’s salary record immediately.
Tally requires actual working days and hours to compute attendance-dependent earnings and deductions. This data is recorded via the Attendance Voucher (Ctrl + F4).
With attendance logged, Tally automatically prorates basic pay, computes overtime compensation, and applies unpaid leave deductions during voucher calculation.
Compliant accounting requires separating the expense accrual (when salaries are earned) from the bank liquidation (when funds are disbursed via WPS).
At month-end (e.g., 30th September), record the operational expense in your P&L:
Salary & Allowances Expense A/c (Indirect Expenses) — Dr AED 50,000 To Employee Salary Payable A/c (Current Liabilities) — Cr AED 50,000In Tally Prime: Go to Vouchers > Ctrl + F4 (Payroll Voucher) > Press Alt + A (Payroll Auto Fill) > Select Salary > Set from 01-Sep to 30-Sep > Review figures > Save.
When salaries are released from your corporate bank account (e.g., 2nd October):
Employee Salary Payable A/c — Dr AED 50,000 To Corporate Bank Current A/c (e.g., Emirates NBD) — Cr AED 50,000This eliminates double-counting: the expense is recognized in September’s P&L, while October’s entry cleanly clears the liability upon bank transfer.
In the UAE, the Wage Protection System (WPS) is a statutory electronic salary transfer system governed by MOHRE and the Central Bank of the UAE. Private entities must upload an electronic Salary Information File (.SIF) formatted to rigorous technical specifications.
| SIF File Field | Technical Description | Example Value |
|---|---|---|
| Employer ID | 14-digit MOHRE Establishment Number | 78912345678901 |
| Bank / Agent Code | 9-digit Central Bank Routing Code of paying bank | 021000001 (Emirates NBD) |
| File Creation Date | Date of SIF file creation (YYYY-MM-DD) | 2026-09-30 |
| Employee Labour ID | 14-digit MOHRE Personal Number | 12345678901234 |
| Employee IBAN | 23-character UAE IBAN string | AE250331000000123456789 |
| Fixed Salary | Contracted basic salary component | AED 6,000.00 |
| Variable Salary | Overtime, bonus, incentives, commissions | AED 1,500.00 |
| Leave Deductions | Deductions for unpaid leave days during month | AED 0.00 |
Eliminates manual multi-sheet Excel calculations. What traditionally required an entire working day is processed in under an hour.
Auto-formats SIF files to Central Bank specifications, avoiding MOHRE delays, warning notices, and company visa blockages.
Generates professional, itemised salary slips showing basic earnings, allowances, deductions, and net pay in one click.
Payroll figures flow directly into P&L and Balance Sheet reports without manual journal re-entry or cross-system syncing errors.
The most frequent reason for SIF file rejections. An invalid IBAN halts salary processing for that employee, requiring manual bank re-submission.
Skipping attendance entry forces Tally to assume zero working days or compute salaries based on unadjusted monthly maximums, creating payroll discrepancies.
Overlapping pay cycles (e.g., running 01-Sep to 31-Sep instead of 30-Sep, or duplicate dates) causes voucher computation errors.
Your 14-digit MOHRE establishment identifier must be configured accurately in Company Statutory Masters before generating SIF files.
A Salary Information File (SIF) is a standardised electronic file mandated by the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) and the Central Bank of the UAE. It contains establishment details, employee labour card numbers, IBANs, bank routing codes, fixed and variable salary components, and leave deduction details for processing through the Wages Protection System (WPS).
Open Tally Prime, press F11 (Features), navigate to Payroll Features, set ‘Maintain Payroll’ to Yes, and press Ctrl+A to save. The Payroll Info and Payroll Vouchers menus will now be accessible from the Gateway of Tally.
At month-end, pass a Salary Journal voucher: Debit ‘Salary Expense Account’ (Indirect Expenses) and Credit ‘Employee Salary Payable Account’ (Current Liabilities). When the salary is disbursed via bank/WPS, pass a Payment voucher: Debit ‘Employee Salary Payable Account’ and Credit ‘Bank Account’.
Common causes of WPS SIF rejection include invalid employee IBANs, wrong 9-digit bank routing codes, mismatched MOHRE 14-digit Employer/Establishment IDs, missing employee labour card numbers, or formatting errors in date fields.
Yes. Tally Prime supports UAE localisation and automated WPS SIF generation. Once employee masters, attendance, and salary vouchers are processed, you can export the exact .SIF format required for upload via corporate banking portals (Emirates NBD, ADCB, FAB, Mashreq, Al Ansari Exchange, etc.).
